MYSTERY OF THE MONTH:

Who Killed Mary Winthrop with an Axe?

A friend of the Society in England writes:

"My name is Patricia Bridges, I live in the village of Little Waldingfield - part of the same benefice as the village of Groton (Gov. John Winthrop's home), in Suffolk, England.

Since retiring from school I have been increasing my thirty years' passion for family history, and as such have become interested in my local village history as well as our family history.

I receive many queries and have been asked to trace a Mary Winthrop who was murdered.

I copy the email I received below.

'Thank you - I am actually researching this for a patient of mine and have little information other than the Mary Winthrop was murdered with an axe. Thank you for any help you can lend us.' "

Would you have any ideas about helping this person?

There it is - no date or place, just the bare fact that Mary Winthrop was killed with an axe. If you are the first to provide details of this grisly murder, we will award you with two passes to the Peabody-Essex Museum Galleries, or the associated nearby Phillips Library in Salem, Massachusetts, for the day of your choosing!

Please contact us with your response and claim your prize!
